Generative AI has taken the world by storm. Over the past year, AI models like ChatGPT, Bard, and DALL·E have sparked debates across industries, from fears of job displacement to excitement about automating tedious tasks. But one area where its impact is particularly profound is scientific research.


In a recent Nature’s Take discussion, top editors from Nature—including Editor-in-Chief Magdalena Skipper, Features Editor Richard van Noorden, and AI-focused Editor Yan Sweeny—shared insights on how AI is changing the way science is conducted. The conversation explored the promises and pitfalls of generative AI, from revolutionizing literature reviews and coding assistance to concerns over misinformation and bias.


From Novelty to Necessity: The AI Leap in Science


AI in research isn’t new, but the release of ChatGPT in late 2022 marked a turning point. As van Noorden explained, OpenAI’s key innovation was refining how AI interacts with humans, making responses feel more natural through reinforcement learning with human feedback. Combined with free access, this move catapulted ChatGPT into widespread use.


Now, scientists have embraced AI across various applications. Surveys indicate that many use AI tools for coding assistance, manuscript drafting, and summarizing complex papers. For non-native English speakers, AI-powered editing has been a game changer, helping them refine academic writing.


But as van Noorden noted, while some researchers experiment with AI to draft entire papers, this remains more of a gimmick than a reliable practice. The real value lies in AI acting as a tool—one that assists but doesn’t replace critical thinking.


AI’s Expanding Role Beyond Text: From Proteins to Drug Discovery


While much of the AI hype centers around language models, its impact extends far beyond text generation. Generative AI is now helping researchers design new proteins, identify potential drug candidates, and even analyze genetic sequences.


Sweeny pointed out that AI’s true scientific potential isn’t in simply asking ChatGPT for a new drug formula but in training models with domain-specific data to generate meaningful insights. Nature recently reported that researchers are using AI models similar to image generators (like Midjourney) to create novel proteins—many of which actually work in real-world experiments.


This capability is already accelerating drug discovery, with AI suggesting potential compounds that can later be experimentally validated.


The Risks: AI Hallucinations, Bias, and the Danger of Misinformation


Despite AI’s potential, researchers remain cautious. Generative AI is known for “hallucinations”—convincing but false outputs that can mislead users. In science, where accuracy is paramount, blindly trusting AI-generated results can be dangerous.

One major concern, as Skipper emphasized, is bias in AI models. Since AI is trained on imperfect datasets, its outputs can reflect existing biases, leading to skewed scientific conclusions. This issue isn’t new, but with AI-generated content proliferating, ensuring unbiased and reliable outputs has become even more critical.


Another challenge is the self-reinforcing nature of AI-generated data. Platforms like Stack Overflow, once a go-to resource for coding help, have seen traffic declines as developers turn to ChatGPT instead. But without fresh user-generated content, future AI models may become stagnant, trained only on their own recycled outputs—an issue known as the “AI feedback loop.”


The Regulation Dilemma: Can AI Be Controlled?


With AI’s growing influence, regulation is inevitable. The EU’s AI Act is pushing for transparency, requiring companies to disclose training data, while China has already implemented strict laws mandating AI-generated content disclosures.


But, as van Noorden noted, enforcement remains a challenge. Some journals have outright banned AI-generated content, while others (like Nature’s parent company, Springer Nature) have opted for transparency instead. AI can assist in scientific writing, but it cannot be listed as a co-author—human accountability is essential.


Yet, enforcing such policies is difficult. As Skipper pointed out, whether an author declares AI use is largely an honor system. AI-generated content is often indistinguishable from human writing, making detection nearly impossible without advanced watermarking techniques—none of which are foolproof.


What’s Next? AI as the Glue Holding Science Together


Looking ahead, AI’s role in science is only set to expand. Sweeny predicts AI will act as an intelligent research assistant, synthesizing data, generating hypotheses, and even guiding experiments.


Skipper sees AI lowering barriers to entry for non-experts, allowing researchers to quickly grasp unfamiliar subjects. While this opens exciting possibilities, it also raises concerns about over-reliance on AI, potentially weakening critical thinking skills.


But not everyone is optimistic. Van Noorden foresees a wave of AI-generated fake papers, leading to a tightening of verification standards. AI-assisted fraud could flood scientific journals, forcing the industry to develop more rigorous authentication processes.


Despite these risks, Skipper remains hopeful. Science has always adapted to new technologies, and AI will be no different. While bad actors will try to exploit the system, the vast majority of researchers will use AI responsibly to accelerate discoveries and improve scientific communication.


The Bottom Line: AI Won’t Replace Scientists—But It Will Redefine Science


AI is here to stay. It won’t make human scientists obsolete, but it will change how research is done, making some tasks faster and more efficient while introducing new risks.
